"The best friend on Earth of man is the tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically,
we have one of the greatest resources of the Earth."

Frank Lloyd Wright

Forests cover 30 per cent of the planet’s total land area. The total forested area in 2005 was just under 4 billion hectares, at least one third less than before the dawn of agriculture, some 10,000 years ago.  (100 hectares is the same as 1 square kilometer).

Rainforest hike in virgin forest near Monterrey with my family. You can tell this area is most likely not secondary forest because in secondary forests it would be difficult to walk through the undergrowth.

Reforestation in Costa Rica

Why Reforest?
Most importantly, because the natural rainforest of the world is being cut down at fast pace (deforestation). Cutting down natural tropical hardwood trees in order to create large bare pastures (the more desirable alternative is an agroforestry approach) and fields of mono-crop agriculture (like pineapple and bananas that are usually not very human/animal/environmentally friendly) are two of the many causes that are destroying the habitat of many plants, animals and people that rely on rain forest products for their main economic activity. Reforesting pastures and fields with timber trees alleviates the demand for natural hardwood lumber, restores more of an agroforestry approach to agriculture and provides a profitable alternative for investors.

Reforesting also:
☼ Protects natural springs, streams, and rivers.
☼ Provides an alternative building material to virgin rainforest lumber.
☼ Produces oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from our air.
☼ Helps you enjoy tax-exempt status and pay no municipal property taxes!
☼ Helps you to attain Costa Rican residency so that you pay no taxes on foreign earnings or capital gains (note - this may be changing soon)!
☼ Increases the value of your land using profitable reforestation.
